Agriculture and Element Earth
Although officially named Agriculture, Science, Art, and Industry, a close examination of each of the statuary reveals that they are also ideal symbolic representations of the four elements. Agriculture, being represented by a sheaf of wheat, is representative of earth. Science, with its central figure holding a genie’s lamp, is indicative of the element air. Art, with the water jug, could be rendered as water. And lastly, industry, with its central figure holding a wooden log, could symbolize fire. -- Frank Albo, 2004
