Media coverage

Media coverage of the show has been very positive. The Winnipeg Free Press, which is our major daily paper here in the Peg published a story this past week about a photo show I am hosting until Sept. 14 week. The story filled the entire front page of the Arts section and I was blown away, to say the least. Winnipeggers are crazy about the Golden Boy and these theories about their legislature.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 25, 2010

PHOTO EXHIBIT UNVEILS ‘MYSTERY AND MAGIC’OF MANITOBA LEGISLATURE

Mystery and Magic of the Manitoba Legislature, a collection of over 20 images, is an exhibition illuminating the hidden mysteries surrounding Canada’s most fascinating architectural structures, as seen through the lens of fine art photographer Charlie McDougall.

The works illustrate the various elements of Frank Albo’s Masonic interpretation of the building as seen by the photographer. This is the first public showing of these photographic illustrations on view at the Cre8ery Gallery for two weeks. The show kicks off with a grand opening on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. and runs through Sept. 16.

“Many Manitobans are surprised to learn that their capitol building has connections to the Bible’s Ark of the Covenant and Temple of Solomon,” McDougall said. “The images were created to both illustrate these secrets while showcasing the beauty of the building, which is fit to hang on any wall.”

“The Manitoba Legislature is a national treasure of symbols of occult knowledge and the secret traditions of Freemasonry,” said Masonic Code scholar Albo, who is known as Canada’s Dan Brown as academic behind The Hermetic Code, which brought the secrets of the building to light. “And there is nothing which better captures the spirit of the Manitoba Legislative Building than these images. The photos are breathtakingly magical!”

Having photographed the building for seven years, McDougall’s earlier work has been used in government and university publications, as well as being featured in Guy Madden’s “My Winnipeg”, one of the top three movies of 2008 (Time Magazine).

Prints will be available for purchase at the show. Cre8ery Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of 125 Adelaide St., in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. For more information on McDougall’s work, visit

Happy new year! Feedback on a preview of a series that has been in the works for some has been overwhelmingly positive and I am looking forward to having it on display this spring. The series features images of the Manitoba legislature, which will be paired with the ideas of Frank Albo. Here is a sample photo of the Grand Staircase:

FEBRUARY 2009 (UPDATED March 6)
Just returned from travel in Europe early in February, including Paris, Amsterdam, Florence and Zurich. Looking at the statues of Michelangelo, Raphael and other greats reinforces the importance of poses, colour and composition in art.

Without a doubt, Florence is the most beautiful city I visited. How beautiful is it? There is a condition that people develop when confronted with its wealth of art called Stendhal syndrome!

Here are links to some of the photos from my trip. Enjoy!

JUNE 2008
Attended the debut of local filmmaker Guy Maddin's My Winnipeg at the Burton Cummings theatre. After a raucous kickoff by girl band rockers The Papsmears, Maddin introduced the show and proceeded to deliver a solid narration of the show, which -- despite his fears expressed in the local paper earlier that week -- was well-received by the "sleepwalking" Winnipeggers . The audience of some 1,200 cheered and didn't jeer. They laughed and didn't heckle. As an aside, what's funny about this is that Maddin says he didn't intend for the movie to be funny. But for those of you who know the city, it's hard not to chuckle when he talks about building demolition being the town's only growth industry or how taxi companies settled a dispute by one agreeing to use the streets and the other sticks to driving through back lanes. As promised in many reviews, the movie was a rich dreamscape of Maddin's memoirs--both real and imagined--of the "snowy and sleepy city." Although, Maddin's works have been underground successes, for the most part, I think this film will break into the mainstream -- at least in "sleepy, snowy Winnipeg."

Photos of the Manitoba legislature and the Golden Boy did receive some prominent play in the film and it was an honour to be a part of such a wonderful show that will no doubt help to build the city's mythology. You can still find some of these photos on the Web at Paul Armstrong's website, www.manitoba-eh.ca, which was inspired by the work of local academic Frank Albo. Frank teaches a course called Western Esotericism at the University of Winnipeg that explains these theories behind the design of the Manitoba legislature in much greater detail. It's a course that is well worth taking,

MAY 2008
Initial proofs using new techniques and materials for a new series are generating exciting results. Plans are in the works for the next show at Level Hair and Spa, which will also feature works by abstract painter Ludo Grolle.

Also, the Akundamoo water lily series has opened at Cousins Deli at 55 Sherbrook St.

JANUARY 2008
Website launched with new design and work continues on material collected from my travel over the past year. Many images need to be printed and the new work will debut this spring.

DECEMBER 2007
Work continues on the relaunch of the website, which will include more information about the works and the stories behind some of the series collections.

OCTOBER 27-29, 2007
Shooting in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Vancouver, B.C., for new works to be featured in the next show to be launched in spring '08.

SEPTEMBER 2007
Visited the botanical gardens as well as biodome in Montreal.

AUGUST 2007
Flew to Los Angeles and drove back along the Pacific Coast Highway, documenting the spectacular views of the ocean, flora and fauna. Crossed the border in Vancouver and photographed the spectacular Rocky Mountains along the Crow's Nest Pass (Highway 3) from B.C. to Alberta.

At the end of the month, a drive to Altona, Manitoba -- the sunflower capital of Canada -- provided material for a series of images during a shoot of the town's most famous attraction.

JULY 2007
Drove to Manitoulin Island, Ontario, stopping along the way to appreciate the Canadian Shield and the panoramic views along the northern Great Lakes.

Contacted by Buffalo Gals Pictures, a Winnipeg film production company. My photos of the Manitoba legislature are to appear in the upcoming Guy Maddin film, My Winnipeg.

JUNE 2007
Launched my first show at the grand opening of my Mike Collingwood's salon, Level Hair and Spa. The works were well received and generated much discussion. The feature series, called Akundamoo, is a collection images of water lilies. (Akundamoo is the Ojibway name for white water lilly.)

MAY 2007
Foxtower.ca is launched.

MARCH-APRIL 2007
Work continues on prints for the show in June and launch of the website.

FEBRUARY 2007
The waterfronts and turquoise waters of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, served as a spectacular backdrop to many photos taken while travelling here. Around every corner during tours of the Mayan temples and villages revealed interesting and dramatic subjects.
